Music in India: Year 2024

The music scene was usually vibrant and dynamic in India. From foreign artists performing to some Indian rockstars taking the nation by storm to tracks going viral, 2024 saw quite some action in India.

Here are few highlights of 2024 in music sector:

Diljit Dosanjh: The Phenomenon

Diljit Dosanjh who has risen to dizzy heights of fame in recent times, captured the nation with its D shows across India. If Coldplay tickets were sold at an inflated price in India, Diljit’s ticket in India as well as abroad sold like hot cakes. The grand finale of the Dil Luminati tour will be held in Ludhiana. His previous show was held in Guwahati, which happened to be Rajyasabha seat of late Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away a day before the show. Diljit graciously dedicated the show to the late PM.

Tauba Tauba Craze

The Karan Aujla song picturised on Vicky Kaushal for the movie Bad Newzz became an instant rage. The song was all over social media-reels, stories, posts. Dancers of all age groups, professional or not, were dancing on that song. The song became so popular that the legendary singer 91 year old Asha Bhosale recently performed the song during her live concert in Dubai.

Icons we bid adieu to

Industry saw some grief with the passing away of music legends like Ustad Rashid Khan, Dr Prabha Atre, followed by Ghazal exponent Pankaj Udhas, Bihar Kokila Shardha Sinha, Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Foreign artists performing in India

The year saw many concerts and announcements of concerts for the upcoming year by international music celebrities and bands. Dua Lipa Performing in India and especially on Bollywood songs was much appreciated. Coldplay show announcement brought the internet to a standstill. Bryan Adams, Maroon 5, Ed Shreen, Alan Walker were some other notable international names to rock the Indian concert scene this year.

Controversies galore

The industry obviously saw some major controversies. The Carnatic classical field divided into two parts with T M Krishna awarded with the Sangeet Kalanidhi M S Subhalakshmi award, considered the highest in that kingdom of music, as Krishna had earlier made some remarks on the Bharat Ratna singer’s caste and stature. In a very different world, The tiff between Badshah and Honey Singh continued. All throughout the year, the industry saw singers criticize the infrastructure for live events; be it Diljit Dosanjh or Monali Thakur. Diljit’s tour was mired with many controversies ranging from singing songs with lyrics indicating alcohol abuse to the singer skipping Indian Flag in his social media post for his Chandigarh show to a fan getting trolled mercilessly for crying and getting overwhelmed at his show, he made headlines throughout. Beyond the infrastructure, the ticketing industry faced a lot of flak and even legal battles, considering the Coldplay tickets fiasco. The much awaited NH7 Weekender was called off literally on the day it was supposed to commence due to legal complications. Zomato, too, faced criticism for its management for the Bryan Adam show in Bangalore.

Trends

The year saw some interesting trends. One major trend was proposals at concerts-From Shreya Ghisal Live to Diljit’s show in Pune, couples sought concert limelight to express their love for each other and artists supporting them wholeheartedly. Secondly, Bollywood stars join singers on stage as a ‘surprise’. Deepika Padukone at Dijlit’s show in Bengaluru, Varun Dhawan at Karan Aujla’s show, Alia Bhatt at Alan Walker’s show, or Parineeti and Vicky Kaushal joining the crowd at various concerts, made headlines. Singers collaborating with their peers or international stars also made a lot of buzz. Diljit collaborated with Ed Shreen, Jazzy B and Honey Singh joining A P Dhillon at a Delhi Concert.
