A R Rahman entered the Indian Music landscape and literally changed how it sounded for mainstream Bollywood tracks. Starting with a bang, Roja, which is still one of the most loved tracks. The maverick music composer is known to be straightforward with his thoughts and he recently shared some with The Week magazine regarding the rampant usage of Artificial Intelligence in Music industry.
According to him, using AI for mastering or enhancing a tune is understandable but to use it to create a new one is where the problem begins. “Creating a tune still requires a human heart and a philosophical mind.” Adding that future will belong to real musicians only.
The composer also cited a hidden caveat that an AI user will never pay the original composer or singer of the song despite using his style. “We need to bell this cat before it becomes a major ethical issue.”
He expressed his disappointment over the growing number of remixes too. “ Post it on Instagram if you want, but not for commercial use. ‘Reimagining’ the song without the permission of the composer and understanding his vision should not happen.”
Many of Rahman’s songs have been remixed. The composer-singer had openly expressed his disapproval even then. The most famous was when Masakali 2.0, originally Masakli in Delhi -6 starring Sonam Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan was recreated in 2022 by Tanishk Bagchi and starred Tara Sutaria and Sidharth Malhotra. Rahman had posted on Twitter that “there are
here are no shortcuts, properly commissioned, and sleepless nights” that goes into creating a song. The remix is produced by the original owner T-Series,and while the credits of the 2.0 mention Rahman’s name, the track has been re-engineered by Tanishk Bagchi and sung by Sachet Tandon and Tulsi Kumar. The Delhi 6 track was sung by Mohit Chouhan and written by Prasoon Joshi.
Music lovers eagerly await Rahman's original tracks. And he never disappoints. In 2024, both his movie works-Raayan in Tamil and Amar Singh Chamkila in Hindi were loved immensely. Upcoming projects like Chaava and Thug Life are equally awaited.
