A R Rahman institutes award for Indian Classical Music

On his Birthday, A R Rahman along with his institution K M Conservatory have announced to award talent in the Indian Classical Music fraternity, titled Bharat Maestro Awards. The awards will have three categories-New talent, Lifetime Achievement honor for educators, and a state medallion for regional practitioners.

The mentors will include legendary singer Asha Bhosale, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit AJoy Chakravarty, and Bombay Jayshri. The advisory board comprises Ila Paliwal, Sai Shravanam, Bharat Bala, Fathima Rafiq, Khatija Rahman, Adam Greig and Clint Valladares.

The award will honor the rich legacy of the art form and Guru-Shishya Parampara, which is exclusive to Indian classical music. The awardee will receive a cash prize along with performance opportunities and collaboration with the Maestro himself.

Rahman mentioned in his live chat on his birthday that award is more than just recognition of talent but also celebrating the unique bond of master and his/her pupil. He said, “It’s about connecting the past, present, and future of music, and uniting us all through the language of sound.”

The Grammy and Oscar award winner completed 58 years and his institution 16 years. The institution offers a comprehensive programs for western as well Indian music.

Rahman also said, “With this annual award being instituted, I want to support in building an ecosystem that will also fuel the immersive experiences in the arena of music,” Rahman added.
